Birds are incredibly adapted to survive our winter climate by taking advantage of the natural winter foods of seeds, fruits and insects in our neighborhoods. Winter is also a time that is especially enjoyable to attract the birds to feeders and water, as they readily utilize the offerings we provide and they reward us with a close connection to nature's wonderful creatures.
Normally, birds that come to feeders obtain only about 20% of their daily calories from our feeders, with the rest being obtained naturally. However, the story changes dramatically during extremely low temperatures. One study showed that when the temperature drops below 10° F, chickadees without access to feeders proved to have twice the mortality rate of their feeder-using counterparts.
To attract more birds this winter, offer energy-packed suet and peanuts in your backyard bird haven. Suet and peanuts are high-energy fat sources that birds will gobble up.
Birds also need an open source of water as they are still very thirsty in the winter. Some will bathe to keep their feathers clean for maximum insulation. You can add a birdbath heater to your existing birdbath or buy a birdbath with a built-in heater.
When you stop by our store this month, we would love to hear about your winter birds and answer any questions you have on how to create a winter haven for the birds.
