Downy Woodpecker

Male - Downy males have red patch on the back of the head. Both
male and female (below) have white backs; both are checkered and spotted with black
and white; and both have spots on their outer tail feathers. Downy woodpeckers are common in forests, wood lots, parks and suburbs.

Hairy Woodpecker

Male - Similar to the Downy, the Hairy is larger, with a larger
bill. Its outer tail feathers are completely white. The Hairy woodpecker has a white back
and black and white spotted wings. The male has a red patch on the back of its head. The Hairy woodpecker is found in open woodlands, suburbs
and parks.
