Project

Wings of Wonder display
The Wings of Wonder display includes life-sized wooden models of 16 species of birds of prey. The birds hang down over the gallery in the visitor center and appear as they would during migration.

In addition, Pathways To Nature donated birdfeeders and binoculars to Hawk Mountain.

Birthplace of Hawk Conservation
Fall migration at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania can fulfill even the most avid birder’s dreams. Sharp-shinned, Cooper’s, Osprey, eagles, Broad-winged – the list goes on and on. And, it’s not just good birding. At Hawk Mountain, you are on “sacred ground” for conservationists, because it was right here that outrage over the shooting of these birds of prey helped stimulate creation of the laws that now protect them.

Before you wander out to the hawk watch, visit the Wings of Wonder educational display, funded with a $15,000 grant from the Wild Birds Unlimited Pathways To Nature Conservation Fund. Here, you’ll see life-sized wooden models of 16 species of raptors as they appear flying past the mountain. You’ll also learn about the world travels of these birds of prey.

Visiting the Wings of Wonder is a great way to “warm up” for the real birds outside. It’s also testimony to just how important it is for birders to lead the charge for more conservation. Without their action decades ago, birders today might have nothing more than wooden models to study. Instead, raptors still grace our skies and inspire each of us to become conservationists.
