Making a Difference in March

Don’t be fooled by the hint of spring that is in the air; the bounty of the new growing season is still a long way off…especially if your life depends on it.

This month marks the lowest point of the year in the supply of birds’ natural foods. The wild seeds, nuts and fruits are almost gone and insect populations have yet to develop. Unpredictable weather doesn’t make life any easier. Sunny, warm spring-like days can rapidly turn into cold, damp conditions that test birds’ survival skills.

Because of these challenges, you have one of the best opportunities of the year to help your birds. You can counteract the lack of natural insects by offering protein rich mealworms. They can be a true lifesaver, especially during prolonged spells of cold and damp weather.

You can also help your birds survive this difficult month by offering high-energy foods such as peanuts and suet which are loaded with fat and protein.

Providing the proper food not only helps birds with their immediate needs, it also prepares them for the upcoming nesting season, too.

A recent study determined that birds with winter access to feeders will lay their clutch of eggs earlier and fledge one more chick per clutch than those with no access to feeders.

Providing birds with the right foods this month can truly make a difference in the quality of their lives.
