Throughout history, there have been a couple of memorable Counts: Count Dracula, the Count of Monte Cristo.
Well, it's time to add another, less fictitious, Count to the list.
Introducing the Great Backyard Bird Count, an important study that helps better define bird ranges, populations, migration pathways and habitat needs.
The Eleventh Annual Great Backyard Bird Count is sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Wild Birds Unlimited and takes place February 15 – 18.
Participants count birds in their backyards, local parks or other locations. Those tallies are then reported online through the BirdSource web site at www.birdsource.org/gbbc.
The BirdSource web site is a revolutionary partnership between citizens and scientists. It gives participants feedback through graphics, animated maps and other regularly-updated information.
This means you can see which birds other participants have observed with just a mouse click.
More than 80,000 checklists were submitted in 2007, and more are expected this year.
Stop by your local Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop this month. We can help you enter all of your counting data and make sure you have all the seed, feeders and bird identification books you need to enjoy another, soon-to-be, historical Count.
