Season's Treatings for Nature

Looking for someone who has been less naughty and more nice this year?

Well look no further than your backyard.

After all, your birds never gave you fruitcake. And when it comes to being naughty or nice, they might even beat out some of your friends and family.

This year, giving your birds a treat is a breeze. All you need is a pinecone or two, a heap of peanut butter and some wonderful birdseed from your favorite nature store - Wild Birds Unlimited.

First, wrap a natural fiber, such as twine or raffia, around the top of the pinecone to create a hanger. Then smear peanut butter (at room temperature) all over the pine cone. Finally, roll it in the birdseed.

TaDa! It's a natural ornament and holiday treat for all your feathered friends.

During this season of giving, we also want you to be aware of those organizations we happily continue to support:

• Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Center - we installed three bird feeding stations and supply seed.
• Tidelands Nature Center and the Jekyll Island Campground - Partnership with Coastal Georgia Audubon Society to provide seed at the feeders and the sanctuary at the campground.
• 4-H Center on Jekyll Island and Earth Day Nature Trail in Brunswick - we provided feeders and supply seed.
• Crooked River State Park - we helped with bird feeding stations throughout the park and a spotting scope for the bird blind viewing station, and we provide seed.
• Woodbine Women's Club - we helped with bird feeding stations on the River Walk and help with seed.
• Little Saint Simons Island is currently installing Wild Birds Unlimited feeding stations.

We also support the Jekyll Island Garden Club and help with the Colonial Coast Birding and Nature Festival.

Each year we receive many requests for our support. We review these at our winter board meeting, and we try to support organizations like those listed above that are "on theme" with what we are trying to accomplish.
